HURLEYVILLE FIREFIGHTER GETS ARMY PROMOTION
HURLEYVILLE, November 2020 — Hurleyville firefighter, Dominic O’Neil, was promoted to Sergeant in the U.S. Army in October.
Sgt. O’Neil was also recognized as a “Hero of the Battle” by the U.S. Army Task Force One:
“FOR EXCEPTIONALLY MERITORIOUS SERVICE DURING ROTATION 20-10 WHILE SERVING AS A STINGER GUNNER WITH ABU COMPANY…SPC O’NEIL SUCCESSFULLY SHOT DOWN A HIP WHILE IN THE DEFENSE AND CONTINUED FIGHTING THOUGH HE WAS THE LONE SURVIVOR. AFTER ABU COMPANY HAD BECOME REDUCED TO THE LAST MAN, SPC O’NEIL MOVED TO THE BREACH BY HIMSELF AND CONTINUED TO FIGHT, SUCCESSFULLY ENGAGING AND DESTROYING ONE ENEMY VEHICLE AND TWO DISMOUNTED SOLDIERS IN CLOSE COMBAT. SPC O’NEIL’S ACTIONS ARE IN KEEPING WITH THE WARRIOR SPIRIT AND REFLECT GREAT CREDIT UPON HIS UNIT AND THE UNITED STATES ARMY”.
Sgt. O’Neil is the son of Kimberly O’Neil and the late Chris Surat. He joined the Army upon graduation from Liberty High School in 2016. His grandparents are John O’Neil and the late Anne Reed.
